Jackson became president four years after the 6th president was chosen by Clay due to a lack of majority vote. His inauguration in 1828 embodied the mob rule embraced by uneducated Ruffians. The inauguration occurred in East Portico of the U.S. capitol, where many people gathered for the swearing-in. Jackson rode a horse to the Whitehouse and was followed by a swam of invited well-wishers.
The average American viewed the new president as a king as many gathered to witness the inauguration. He was loved by ordinary Americans, who cheered for his take of office. The fact that he invited the crowd to the Whitehouse proved his love for the common people. He was the man of the people.

Donald Trump saw himself as a man of the people, connecting his ruling with Andrew Jackson's. Both presidents are considered populists who fought for equality and railed against the elites' corruption.

The tariff's purpose was to protect American cloth producers in the north and west from the competition of imported products. This reduced the demand for the southern raw cotton and increased the price of final goods from the north. The southerners referred to the tariff passed in 1828 as the law of abomination (U.S. History, 2022). They looked to Calhoun, who advocated for the doctrine of nullification. This could have triggered civil war as Jackson asked Congress to allow him to enforce federal laws in South Carolina using the army. The war was prevented when Congress revised the tariff.
