Philosophy of Nursing Practice

Coursework Instructions:

PHILOSOPHY OF NURSING PRACTICE
For this first course Discussion, you will present a philosophy of nursing practice that draws on your experience, area(s) of expertise, and beliefs. Looking ahead to your role as a DNP, also consider how to expand your awareness of issues beyond your own current practice—such as regarding diversity, global health, collaboration—and how to fulfill the Walden requirement to advocate for social change.
In short, begin now to commit to a higher level of contribution and practice as a DNP and to reflect that commitment in your philosophy of nursing practice for today and the future. As you continue through the course, note this image will appear with each Discussion and indicates an opportunity to connect your thinking with that of colleagues, for learning with and from one another.

I have had the privilege of working in various health settings, but on most occasions, I have worked on community health with underserved populations in urban regions. Some people I have worked with include street children and the homeless. This experience has impacted me as a nurse, as I have first-hand information about how social and economic status can easily influence health. Working with this population made me understand that healthcare is a fundamental human right and that working towards health equity should be reinforced as the country is far from attaining SDG goal 3, which focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all people for sustainability development (United Nations, n.d.). This experience has also enhanced my belief that nursing care must consider the patient as a whole. It is impossible to provide healthcare to this population, yet, their emotional, social and spiritual well-being is not in a good state, and hence, all these issues should be addressed. As Mcewen & Wills (2019) described, this is the holistic view of human health. I have developed skills such as care coordination, case management, and utilizing healthcare resources. Most importantly, I have learned about health education for this population, as with most of them being uneducated, their awareness about health conditions is minimal, and they do not take the necessary measures to prevent themselves.
My nursing experience, expertise, and beliefs have led me to develop a philosophy of nursing practice that emphasizes the importance of health equity since everyone deserves equal access to healthcare, cultural competence since the urban poor are mainly comprised of different cultural entities, and they may have unique views about their healthcare, and holistic nursing practice. I believe nursing requires continuous learning, growth, and development, and I am committed to expanding my professional awareness through the DNP program.
One goal is to understand better the social determinants ...
