As a person in charge of a whole team, a leader must encourage and inspire. It takes a momentum of effort to carry a team to success despite hurdles and failures (Zaccaro, Rittman, & Marks, 2001). To encourage a team requires to be positively driven by goals and success. On the other hand, an inspirational leader is the first one to manifest a firm foundation of courage and intelligence.
In terms of leadership, I am now in the phase where I appreciate the role of each team member. I acknowledge my role as the head in everything we do together, and I also recognize their competence and ability in their assigned task (Zaccaro, Rittman, & Marks, 2001).
Previously, when I still had a lot of basic leadership knowledge to learn, I tend to be arrogant thinking that I was superior. My view was that, as a leader, I have the authority to demand and give a command to my members. During those learning days, for me, leadership gave me power in the field.
However, as learning grows and perspective becomes wider, I have learned to see myself as among the members of the group and not someone on a different ground than them. I found myself stepping down from the pedestal I set for myself as the leader. From there, I have understood that I should share the burden of tasks and that leadership does not exempt me from working.
Also, I have learned to accept that there will be opinions better than mine in this field. Again, leadership does not make everything about me valid and superior to everybody else. Leadership makes me listen to my members' ideas and suggestions that open our activities to more creativity and potentiality.
There is still a lot to learn in this field of leadership. I have mentally and emotionally prepared myself for the expansion of understanding about leadership. I read more on vital leadership skills that can help me be more competent and fit for the position. I also plan to interact with my members more because it is an advantage to know what kind of people you are working with. Lastly, I am making myself kinder and empathic for instances when my members or I need emotional support.
Vision
If I am going to be ideal for my vision, in 3 to 5 years, I want to become an empathic and ideal leader. This image of a leader is inspired by the willingness to lead while lifting others. My ideal vision imagines myself established as a reliable leader who would have emotional and ethical conscience towards the members and other people.
However, in times when the disrupted system is on the move, it is quite hard to become strictly empathic and ethical. There will always be instances when your principles and ethics would be challenged and put to questioning. For instance, a leader may find it hard to choose between helping a member personally or drawing the line as a member and leader.
