It is indeed true that both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis present similar symptoms like joint pain and stiffness. However, the main difference between the two diseases is the cause of the joint symptom. For example, it is caused by mechanical tear and wears on the joints, and it starts in an isolated joint. On the other hand, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune illness whereby the body's immune system attacks the joints (Pincus et al., 2019). Although both diseases cause inflammation in the joints, rheumatoid arthritis causes severe inflammation. Consequently, rheumatoid arthritis can cause fever and flu-like signs, while the symptoms of osteoarthritis are limited to joints.
