Johnson did an impressive job of explaining the importance of adequate staffing in nursing. One of the arguments that fascinated me is that studies depict that adequate nurse staffing is crucial in the delivery of quality healthcare services, which improves patient health outcomes (Han et al., 2021). In particular, the nurse-to-patient ratio significantly determines the quality of care provided to sick individuals. For example, a hospital with a nurse-to-patient of 1 to 5 is likely to offer better medical services than another with a ratio of 1 to 10. For nurses to provide quality patient care, they need to build and maintain a trusting relationship with their patients. On that note, a caregiver responsible for numerous patients does not have enough time to interact with them, meaning that he or she has minimal chances of understanding sick people’s health needs. In contrast, nurses who take care of a few patients offer quality services since they not only comprehend individuals’ health problems, but also know their cultural values, norms, and beliefs, which contribute to better treatment or care. Hospitals with inadequate nurses face numerous issues, including nurse burnout. My colleague discusses nurse burnout, which has far-reaching consequences on the delivery of medical services. Studies have shown that nurse burnout is the primary reason that lead to job dissatisfaction, demotivation, and stressful working environment (Shah et al., 2021). That is why health institutions should ensure to hire more nurses to lower the nurse-to-patient ratio so that patients can receive quality healthcare services. Something else that Johnson has done well is showing the importance of floating staff. I like the fact that float nurses play vital roles in reducing the workload and burnout.
