Nursing is a field that calls for collaboration between other professionals. As Pantha, Jones, and Gray (2020) indicate, inter-professional collaborations between nurses and physicians helps improve patient outcomes. However, for there to be collaboration, healthcare professionals need to work on their interpersonal skills. I believe that I have a weakness in how I relate with people, and in a healthcare setting where interpersonal skills are key to helping patients, I will need to improve my interpersonal communication skills.
Even though I believe that my technology skills are okay, I believe that I will need some improvement if I am to make a successful transition. Technology skills are key to helping nurses deliver excellent care. However, technology keeps changing and evolving, and nurses and other healthcare professionals have to keep up with the changes. I believe that I need to keep learning and seeking ways to improve my technology skills.
I am dedicated to my work. However, this can become a liability in the life of a nurse. Dedication to me means that I have to do everything within my power to make something work. However, having read on how fatigue and burnout impact the productivity of nurses (Mudallal, Othman, and Hassan, 2017), I believe I will need some help here to understand how to balance work and personal life.
Develop at least 5 goals and objectives for this new position. Each must be realistic and measurable with supportive references and plan to accomplish each.
Be responsible for two patients a day by the end of the month. According to Sharma and Rani (2020), teaching hospitals should have a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3. In working towards this, I would like to be able to juggle two patients by the end of my starting month.
Be able to read and understand patient data in 10 days. Even though school teaches us how to take and interpret patient data, the pressure that comes with being in a hospital can be overwhelming. Understanding data is key here, but as Ong and Penm (2019) indicate, not all data is key. So, one must learn to differentiate.
Correctly assess pain levels of at least five patients by the end of a month. Successfully assessing pain is key to offering effective and apt care to patients (Booker and Haedtke, 2016). Therefore, there is a need to learn pain assessment tools and equip myself with information on how I can successfully assess pain.
Correctly administer medication to two patients by the end of the month. By medication administration, I mean that I should have correctly assessed the patients, determined the underlying issues they are facing, and administer the correct medication and advice. Medication is a crucial aspect of nursing and is usually done with supervision. I would like to make h...
