Lamoille Ambulance Service (LAS) Inc. entered a Corporate Integrity Agreement (CIA) on 23rd June 2003 with the Office of Inspector General (OIG) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in the United States of America (USA). The primary reason LAS had a CIA was to foster adherence to the regulations, statutes, and written directives of Medicaid, Medicare, and other Federal healthcare programs as defined in the 42 USC Section 1320a-7b(f) (Lamoille Ambulance Service Inc. For instance, without a CIA, it can be challenging for an ambulance provider to understand how to create an effective audit program that addresses financial relationships, claims, and other problems. Some of the CIA’s requirements for ambulance providers include ensuring that services provided are medically necessary, physicians have proper certifications, appropriate modifiers, and codes, and services are billed accordingly (Scarano, 2008). As such, by obtaining the CIA, LAS ensured compliance with all the OIG’s requirements, and it has operated well without any disruption.
