Rebecca Onie’s “What If Our Healthcare System Kept Us Healthy?” shows the importance of helping patients outside the clinical scope. In other words, do doctors and other health professionals ask sick people whether they have enough food or safe housing before treating them? Or do they use the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy (“Rebecca Onie: What If Our Healthcare System Kept Us Healthy,” 2012)? Rebecca helped me realize that the approach made by numerous healthcare facilities, which emphasize treatment and the prescription of medicines, does not keep people healthy.
My healthcare facility keeps people healthy by treating diseases and prescribing medications. In particular, it does not help patients to fulfill their life necessities, such as food and safe housing. Although all patients who come in are treated and given proper medications, rarely do health professionals ask whether these people can afford food and other basic needs.
