Introduction
Despite exceeding average expenditure on healthcare services, the United States ranks poorly among its counterparts. According to a survey conducted by the Commonwealth Fund, the United States ranks last out of the eleven countries involved in the survey (Schneider et al., 2021). The ranking is based on the following aspects access to care, care processes, administrative efficiency, equity and health outcomes. According to the Commonwealth Fund, Norway ranks in the first place and the United Kingdom ranks in the 4th place (Schneider et al., 2021). By comparing Norway’s and United Kingdom’s healthcare systems performances to that of the United States, this report recommends changes that the United States should adopt in the future.
Comparison
One of the most important measures of performance is access to healthcare. While the United States ranks last, Norway ranks second, and the United Kingdom ranks fourth on how accessible healthcare services are to members of the population. Both Norway and the United Kingdom have in place a national fund that ensures overall contribution towards healthcare (commonwealth Fund, 2015). On the other hand, in the United States, many individuals are unable to afford care services, especially those with little to no income. Residents of the United States face more difficulties in meeting bills as compared to residents in the United Kingdom and Norway.
Another vital measure of healthcare is administrative efficiency. As the United States ranks last, Norway and the United Kingdom rank 1st and 4th, respectively (Schneider et al., 2021). Administrative efficiency reflects on the ability to gain access to important patient data and use it to make decisions. In the United States, caregivers tend to face many challenges in obtaining information relevant to understanding patient history. The Norway system is considered one of the most effective in communication; with a well-established means of communicating; especially when the patient needs are complex (Laugesen, 2021). Similarly, the centralization of the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom has led to the administrative function consuming less time consuming and more focus on quality care provisions.
