Cultural competency is extremely important in health care, as the consumers we serve come from diverse backgrounds. Inpatient and outpatient services account for the largest sector of health care services; however, cultural competency extends to all health care sectors. It is vital that as a health care professional, we are culturally competent to provide our consumers with high-quality health care.

Introduction
Being culturally competent as a healthcare professional is vital since it solves healthcare disparities faced by people from diverse cultural backgrounds. When healthcare professionals are culturally competent, all patients, regardless of their race, religion, or beliefs, can acquire care and live healthy lives (Handtke et al., 2019). Therefore, cultural competence in healthcare entails giving effective and quality care to patients from diverse backgrounds. As a requirement for this paper, three tests for cultural competency were taken. Therefore, the paper will include a personal rating after the tests, how to improve the rating, cultural competency in the United States (U.S) healthcare system, and why leaders in the healthcare industry play a critical role in ensuring cultural competency.
Personal Rating
The first test was a cultural competence self-test from the University of Wisconsin. The test was a checklist with eighteen questions, and my response to all the questions was ‘frequently.’ Therefore, on a scale of 1 to 5, I would rate my performance as 5 out of 5, which means ‘exceeding expectations.’ The second test was a cultural competence checklist from the Central Vancouver Island multicultural society (CVIMS). In most points, my responses scored 4, with a few scoring 3 out of 4 points to mean ‘fairly often.’ Based on a scale of 1 to 5, I would rate my performance as 4 out of 5, which means ‘meeting expectations.’ The third test assesses intercultural competence in twenty multiple-choice questions. I scored 11 out of 20 questions correctly. Based on a scale of 1 to 5, I would rate my performance as 3 out of 5, which means ‘approaching expectations.’
How to Improve the Rating
I would attend cultural competence training sessions to improve my rating and exceed expectations in future cultural competence tests. The training would help improve how I respond to cultural differences and improve my intercultural communication skills (Kaihlanen et al., 2019).
