The vaccine I chose is the Pfizer BioNTech (COMIRNATY), an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. It was approved by the FDA for vaccination and authorized for use as a primary and booster vaccine for COVID for people five years old and above (CDC, 2022).
Indications and Contraindications
The vaccine was approved for the protection against the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its variants, and this is the main indication for the vaccine. The vaccine is mainly preventative due to its nature as an mRNA vaccine. The contraindications include possible anaphylaxis due to a previous mRNA vaccine does, or a vaccine component like polyethylene glycol (Australian Government Department of Health, 2022).
Schedule of Administration
According to the CDC, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine would be administered to persons from 6 months of age and above, with certain specifications. For all age groups, there are three doses to be administered. The first dose is to be administered to age-appropriate persons and the second dose is to be administered at least 3-8 weeks after the first dose.
