This is the first nursing course that I have taken that focuses on nursing theory and expands upon its contribution to nursing practice. After completing the reading for this week and researching nursing theory, I find nursing theory to be a useful tool because it helps describe the nature of the nursing profession (Butts & Rich, 2018). Not only does it reflect the core of nursing, but theory also helps guide the progression of the profession. Additionally, nurses can use theory to identify their role in the healthcare setting and follow the mission and values of nursing practice (Younas & Quennell, 2019).
Nursing theory is a useful tool for nurse practitioners (NPs) because it can aid in “personal knowing, reflection, reasoning, critical thinking and effective decision-making” (Younas & Quennell, 2019, p. 540). Some nursing theories are more applicable to the NP practice model than others. However, Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory and King’s theory of goal attainment are two commonly studied and applicable nursing theories (Younas & Quennell, 2019; de Leon-Demare et al., 2015). A case study by Yip (2021) describes how the self-care deficit theory can help NPs understand their patients better to motivate and empower them to manage their health. Theory can also help “guide the development of interventions for managing multifaceted human health problems” (Younas & Quennell, 2019, p. 553). Furthermore, nursing theory helps to enhance the nursing process to provide more comprehensive patient-centered care (Younas & Quennell, 2019).
