Create a 500‐750-word comprehensive outline that communicates the following about your chosen topic:
Introduction: Identify the risk management topic you have chosen to address and why it is important within your health care sector.

Preventing Hospital Acquired Infections
One of the most preventable causes of patient deaths and increased hospital stay is hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). According to Monegro et al. (2021), HAIs are infections that are absent at the time of hospital admission but develop during the hospital stay. They include catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI), and surgical site infections (SSIs), among others. SSIs are especially common among patients who have undergone a surgical procedure and, as such, are of interest to operating room (OR) nurses. When patients come into the OR, they expect to get better and not develop preventable complications such as HAIs.
Rationale
HAIs pose a threat to patient safety, and as such, the prevention of HAIs should be incorporated with the safety management plan. At Duke, the risk management plan does not illustrate how the prevention of HAIs fits into the plan to promote patient safety. Given how much SSI contributes to HAIs, it is important to reduce them. According to Magill et al. (2018), the reduction of SSI contributes greatly to the reduction of HAIs in the U.S., enhancing patient safety. Implementation of a risk management strategy to prevent HAIs will ensure the organization complies with any HAI prevention laws.

HAIs, more specifically, SSI, pose a safety threat to patients, and as such, healthcare organizations have a responsibility to prevent them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2022) reveals that 20% of all HAIs are attributed to SSI. Also, according to the Patient Safety Network (PSNet) (2019), about 2-4% of patients undergoing a surgical procedure develop SSI, and about 3% of these patients die as a result of SSI. When patients die, or their safety is threatened by HAIs such as SSI, the organization and its workers may face legal action from the patient and /or their families.
Implementation
To implement this strategy, the following steps will be taken:
