Even though the current laws and policies provide the parents (especially the mother) some room to choose whether they would continue with their baby or not, the reality of such cases is much challenging to assess. Some strict rules and regulations deem termination a criminal offense. Even for situations where they are allowed to choose, the parents and the doctors must first assess different criteria related to the fetus’ health and future well-being. In the case presented, it could be seen that each of the characters is acting differently based on different perceptions about the child’s future. One example of a decision, which is based on theory is that of Marco. It could be seen that he (as the father) has asked Dr. Wilson not to tell Jessica about the case of their child. This decision is an example of a stress theory/coping theory (Walinga, n.d.). Specifically, Marco believes that if Jessica knows about the condition of their child, then their conditions might become worse. As presented in the case, the beginning of the couple has been filled with hardships, and they are just starting to start anew. Knowing about this could put her wife into a variety of risks and complications. According to this theory, without Marco’s support as a husband, then the effects of knowing the conditions of their child would be higher. His request to Dr. Marco is an example of this decision.
On the other hand, Dr. Wilson follows the rules and regulations of medical ethics. As stated, it would be the doctor’s (or any other health professional) obligation to provide the details of a patient’s health condition, and that includes her child (Educaloi.QC, 2018).
