I chose Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner as my Master’s Program for various rationales. The demand for primary care specialists and physicians is increasingly enormous such there could be 100,000 vacancies within the United States by 2030. There are no sufficient psychiatrists to meet patients’ demands within psychological illnesses. A significant contributing problem entails a rising patient population that is sicker and older compared to previous years’ figures coupled with rising addiction, suicides, and depression rates. Many healthcare professionals are reaching the retirement age (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2019). Therefore, nurses with a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program could alleviate the current crisis.
Given the myriad of careers within mental health practice, I encountered challenges identifying the appropriate master’s program. I lacked mentorship about possible career options within psychiatric nursing. In this way, I lacked information concerning problems facing the nation’s health systems, particularly concerning aging psychiatric nurses and the numerous social and health issues that needed urgent alleviation (Sabella & Fay-Hillier, 2014). Furthermore, some master’s programs provide limited career opportunities and pathways after an individual graduates.
