Dorothea Orem as a nurse theorist has shape the nursing practice landscape. Her theoretical formulation has defined the nursing perceptions and attitudes towards care. Through, her theory the Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, nurses have adopted crucial philosophies of care. Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory focuses on person’s capacity to perform self-care. Thus, self-care is centric to her theoretical conceptualization. According to Dorothea Orem, self-care comprises practices and behaviors that individuals can initiate and perform to maintain life, well-being, and health. When individuals cannot meet self-care needs, especially when there are deficiencies in performing functions that improve life and maintain health and well-being, we say a self-care deficit exists. This notion of self-care deficit is what Dorothea Orem captured in her theory.
Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory will greatly apply to my future role in advanced nursing practice. It will shape and defined how I provide care for the patient. Most of the time, I know that nurses attend to patients in their most vulnerable circumstances. I will need to deliver care to the patient in critical care setups, outpatient units, inpatient wards, and emergency departments, among other areas! Alternatively, my responsibility would involve overseeing patients' access to quality care that improves the quality of life.
