Cultural competence is significant in health care since it facilitates the provision of high-quality medical services to consumers from different ethnicities. Indeed, it ensures that healthcare professionals can meet the needs of patients from various cultures. The paper focuses on three cultural competency tests and illustrates how physicians can improve their ratings and embrace cultural competency in the provision of quality healthcare services.
After taking the “Cultural Competence Self-Test,” I can rate my answers as 4. Notably, on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 means needs improvement and 5 means exceeds expectations. The test covers crucial things in the physical environment, values and attitudes, and communication styles that reveal whether a healthcare professional observes cultural awareness. I selected frequently and occasionally for the majority of the questions (Behavioral Health Training Partnership, n.d.). I can improve my rating by ensuring that brochures and other printed materials given to patients are written in languages that they can fully understand. Moreover, the vocabulary used should take into account the average literacy levels of people and their families. Another vital thing that can help me improve my rating is by incorporating patients’ religious beliefs in the treatment process.
“Cultural Competence Self-Assessment Checklist” enables individuals to recognize the changes they need to become more effective in living and working in a diverse environment. The test focuses on three primary areas, namely knowledge, skills, and awareness (Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society, n.d.). My answer rating in this test is 3. In the three sections of this test, my answers were either occasionally, fairly often, or always. On that note, to improve my rating, I need to emphasize cultural awareness, cultural flexibility, and effective communication across cultures.
For “The London School of International Communication,” I scored 14 out of 20. The test has helped me realize that speaking a foreign language does not necessarily enable an individual to create good personal and professional relationships (The London School of International Communication, 2020). One has to interact with others to understand their cultural values. My rating for this test is 4. The primary thing a person can do to improve the rating is by interacting with people from other cultures and learning how they do things. For instance, I have learned that giving a Chinese a clock as a gift can be provocative since clocks mean the end of time in that specific culture.
