Mary P. Mahoney was one of the important nurses of the 19th century. According to Judd and Sitzman (2014), Mahoney became the first professional black nurse when she graduated from New England Hospital for Women and Children in 1879. The authors also note that she co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN) and also managed to complete “one of the first accelerated nurse training programs” (p.83). The numerous requirements of the intensive program meant that many students were not able to complete it. While 42 students joined the program in 1978, only four managed to complete it, and Mahoney was one of them (Spring, 2017). Such an achievement makes her one of the most important nurses of the 19th century.
