Christian Perspective of Ethics and Spirituality in Contrast to Postmodern Relativism
The Christian perspective of spirituality and ethics is guided by Jesus Christ’s teachings and the Holy Bible (Mele & Fontrodona, 2017). God’s commandments determine Christians’ ethics. These believers adhere to God’s principles and try to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. Some of the commandments prohibit Christians from worshipping idols, killing, stealing, committing adultery, and always remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. In that light, when Christians are making decisions, they consider the commandments to avoid going against them. Additionally, their spirituality is determined by Christ’s teachings. When Christ descended on earth, He acted as an example so that people can follow His footsteps if they want to remain holy and see the kingdom of heaven. As such, Christians’ ethics and spirituality significantly affect their beliefs, desires, motivation, and shape these individuals’ behaviors.
On the contrary, the postmodern relativism perspective within healthcare depicts that ethics is socially constructed and that it can change with time. Morality, truth, and knowledge exist based on society, context, culture, and history (Ratner, 2017). As opposed to the Christian perspective of ethics and spirituality, postmodern relativism shows that there is no universal wrong and right. In the healthcare context, healthcare providers do not solely depend on the patient’s spirituality when providing medical services.
