In California, a newly Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) looking forward to becoming a prescriber must follow the state of California Board of Nursing requirements. The first step is to apply for advanced practice registered nurse license together with a furnishing number application in which the second portion will be completed by an individual's NP program to verify the level of pharmacology content in their education. If an individual attends a nursing practitioner program in California, they may proceed to apply for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number as the second step to the requirement. California's NP program allows three hours of pharmacology content for schedule II drugs (ThriveAp, 2017). Additionally, nursing practitioners are allowed to prescribe medicines with a furnishing number. However, a DEA number is required for one to prescribe controlled substances. In this case, an individual with a DEA number can prescribe drugs beyond schedule II.
Thirdly, if an individual did not attend the NP program in California, they are required to take a 3-hour approved continuing education course offered by California Association for Nurse Practitioners.
