Your Topic is Pre-planned Curriculum vs. Emergent Curriculum as you will examine the pros and cons of pre-planned curriculum and emergent curriculum.
The title of your Position Paper must be: Pros and Cons of Emergent Curriculum
Before you start your position paper remember that a pre-planned curriculum is usually a curriculum that has a theme. The teacher gives a different theme usually every month and the students follow the theme. In a pre-planned curriculum teachers are not really looking or considering any input from observations they had with the children, teachers may not consider the children’s interests, parents may not consider any input from the children’s parents. Therefore a pre-planned curriculum comes already made as the pre-planned curriculums are already to go as it tells the teachers what books to read to the children and it tells the teachers what activities to do because everything is already pre-planned.
Meanwhile, in emergent curriculum is different as you consider the children’s interests and needs as you observer children through observations, and you start listening to parent’s input about their children.
Now for your position paper I want you to follow the format of having an:
Introduction: State why the main idea is important. State your thesis/claim. Your thesis is more than a general statement about your main idea. It needs to establish a clear position you will support with balanced proofs.
Body: Your body must include 3 sections such as an argument, an objection and a response. Consequently, the emergent curriculum has surfaced as the right antidote to this need and in some way replacing the pre-planned curriculum. A preplanned curriculum is one, which contains the written subject that schools ought to teach. In essence, it is “often a statement of what the school authorities, state government or some group outside the classroom requires the teacher to teach” (Mangold, n.d.). This approach demands that the teacher is equipped with whatever is needed in the classroom. This system appears shortchanged in that it endears to control the content (what children learn) as well as the process (how they learn) regardless of any ensuing changes (Stacey, 2009). On the other hand, Jones (2012) coined the term ‘emergent curriculum in 1970. According to Jones (2012, p. 66), “Curriculum was set down only after it had taken place, not laid out in advance except in broad terms.” This point marks the underlying principle of the emergent curriculum. The emergent curriculum takes into the dynamism that arises in the teaching process and more so, kids who are less conversant with rules and limitations imposed under ordinary learning.
