Emergent curriculum is planned curriculum that responds to the children’s interests and learning experiences, even as it is unscripted and there is more emphasis on planning response to the children observation. There are challenges to making observations and interactions with the children while teaching them in an immersive setting. Even though, early childhood educators pre-plan they need place emphasis on responding to the children’s interests and documenting the observation (Stacey, 2011). Reflecting on the observations is necessary in emergent curriculum, but the observations are documented even as there are challenges in the documentation when one is also observing. There is documentation of evidence of the learning process and outcomes including evaluation of the learning (Making Learning Visible, 2006). Emergent curriculum focuses more on planned response and not pre-planning since the reflection and response are based on observations of the children including their interests and challenges. The response is intentional and closely linked with the inquiry and emergent curriculum is flexible.
