Early Childhood Education: Dual language approach for Chaeryun a four-year-old Korean child

Coursework Instructions:

Early Childhood Education:
Topic: Dual language approach for Chaeryun a four-year-old Korean child.
Prompt:
Read the Case Study Below:
Chearyun is a 4 year old girl. Her primary language is Korean. Her older brother, Gi, is in the third grade. Her father works as an engineer. Mom was a dentist but gave up her profession when she moved to America. The family moved from Korea for the fathers work exactly 1 year ago. The only one who has any knowledge of the English language in the family is the father, who has limited English skills. However, enough receptive English to build on and to support some basic communication needs.
Chearyun attends a part-time play-based preschool. When her parents drop her off she waves and is heard softly speaking to parents. She has no issues with separation. She quickly enters the playground climbing structure to play but it does not appear that she has a specific playmate but does follow along with others in climbing and sliding in a particular direction. She moves to the outside writing center and she draws shapes of people, trees, flowers and animals. She has strong gross/fine motor skills and she is taller than her peers, eats with chopsticks, smiles at others, and appears aware of her surroundings. She does not shy away but uses pointing, pulling or nodding yes or no to convey a want or need. She appears to follow along with the group transitions easily. She hugs her teachers and stays engaged the majority of her time in the preschool. She does not use expressive language. She does not talk.
On occasion, she has outbursts with loud crying and it usually results in finding out that there was some injustice or injury caused by a peer (i.e. different peer takes toys, pushes, or makes faces). It is difficult to console her and she will usually sob long and hard, resulting in a call to the parents to pick her up early due to emotional distress.
During group times Chaeryun looks at the teacher but often drifts and begins to play quietly on the rug with a little hand toy (pony). She works well in the class and does not take toys or disrupt the play of others. She loves to paint, draw, do puzzles, water play or anything you put in front of her she appears curious and takes initiative.

Now after reading the Case Study on Chaeryun I want you to consider a dual language approach for her. Remember Chaeryun moved from South Korea to the United States and Chaeryun is in the process of learning English as her second language.
Now, pretend you are Chaeryun’s early childhood teacher. I want you to create some strategies for each learning center in your “make-believe classroom” where Chaeryun is inside your classroom.
Create a table listing ways you would support her language, literacy and writing skills.
Your task is to provide 5 classroom learning centers and write 3 examples for each center as to how you can support Chaeryun’s her language, literacy and writing skills in learning English as her second language.
For example, below are two classroom learning centers that I will demonstrate to you on what I want you do. In my make belief classroom I chose the "Art Area" Learning Center and the "Library Area" Learning Center and this is how I would help Chaeryun:
Art Learning Center:
Strategy #1: In our art area of the classroom I will help Chaeryun by labeling materials in Korean words with the help of her family who helped translate some of the words.

Strategy #2: In the art area I include objects from South Korea such as sculptures, paintings, photos on the all or writing tools, or photos of objects from her country to encourage drawing or painting.
Strategy #3: Use a translator app for teaching words in English to Chaeryun. For instance, I will show Chaeryun a crayon and have the app to translate it to her in her Korean language and vice versa so she could learn how to say crayon in English.
Now in the second example, I will show is the Library Area Learning Center.
Library Learning Center:
Strategy #1: I will include books with lot of photos of objects and sit and explore those books with Chaeryun so when Chaeryun points to the object in the book or photo I will name the object in English and pronounce it to her and her encourage her to repeat it to me.
Strategy #2: I will encourage Chaeryun to sit next to her classmates when it is reading time. In addition, in reading activities I will pair up Chaeryun with a supportive classmate that be welcoming to share his or her book with her as they try to read together.
Strategy #3: I will bring to the classroom picture books from South Korea and have Chaeryun share the names of the things from her South Korean culture and I will provide the English translation for the other students.

Assignment Instructions: Now that you have an idea of what to do please complete the following steps:
Step #1: Now, it’s your turn to provide 5 classroom learning centers and write 3 examples for each center as to how you can support Chaeryun’s her language, literacy and writing skills in learning English as her second language.
Step #2: Since I already wrote about the Art Area and Library Area Learning Center, now I want you to write about five other different learning centers commonly found in classrooms that you can help Chaeryun in your make belief classroom. You can choose any of the five learning 5 learning centers listed below:
• The Block Area
• Dramatic Area
• Music Area
• Sand/Water Area
• Nature/Science Area
• Math Area
• Free Play Area
Step #3: After you have chosen the five learning center areas now write three different strategies as to how you can support Chaeryun’s her language, literacy and writing skills in learning English as her second language.

Assignment Guidelines:
• Your completed table with all the learning centers and the three strategies will probably take up one full page or over 1 page but not more than two pages.
• Must be in Times New Roman Font Size 12
• Must have a Title Page.
• Must be in APA 7 format
• No references required

Note to the Essay Writer:
* I uploaded a Microsoft Word attachment titled "Table Dual Language Approach for Chaeryun". This is the template one can use to complete this assignment. The numbers on the left side column indicate where the learning centers should be and the other columns are to fill out the three different strategies for each learning center.
* I wasn't sure how many pages to order between one page or two pages but since I figured that once the assignment is completed it will probably be just over one page so I decided to be on the safe side put 2 pages.
Thank you for your time

1). Free Play Area

In the free play area, I would let Chaeryun interact freely with her peers in playing different games. While playing the games, I would call her aside and pronounce the various games' names to her in English. I would repeat to her and have her pronounce them back in English repeatedly.

While playing the games in the free play area, I would assemble the various playing materials-balls, jumping ropes, toys, swings, and sliding ramps. At this stage, I would show Chaeryun
every piece of equipment and pronounce them to her in English and have her repeat after me. We would do the exercise repeatedly until she gets the grasp

I would carry with me labeled charts of different game's and equipment's names in the play area. While showing her every game and playing material name, I would show her the labeled charts for how they are supposed to be written and give her a book and a paper to copy letter by letter while pronouncing her every letter sound.

2). Math Area

In the Math area, I would strive to assemble various counting, addition, and subtraction materials. Starting with counting materials, in this case, I would offer something appealing to her, like cookies. I would give every child a cookie while counting in English and have her repeat after me.

I will Pair her with other supportive children in building mathematical figures like blocks, circles, volumes, and cylinders. After involving in the construction of different statistics, I would show her how they look in books and try to build some by herself.

I would assemble Mathematical writing materials-charts, figures, books labeled in the Korean language and show them to her and let her write them in Korean. After which, I would introduce the same materials one by one and let her ...
