Understanding Stored Procedures

Coursework Instructions:

This subject is near and dear to my heart: Stored procedures provide a lot of advantages over ad hoc querying, so why not take advantage of automating tasks, queries, reporting, and other functionality in a database using a stored procedure?
When explaining the rationale of your answer, be sure to explain not only how the procedure will help, but what are the benefits of using a stored procedure over alternatives? This promises to be a great topic too, I can't wait to see the benefits we can identify for using stored procedures!

Week 5 Discussion 1: Stored Procedures
Stored Procedures offer users numerous benefits when they are operating a relational database. A stored procedure accomplishes the same objectives as an ad hoc query. However, the main difference is that an ad hoc query requires the user execution every time someone intends to use it. At the same time, a stored procedure is compiled once it is executed for the first time within the database. Therefore, the stored procedure is faster because it eliminates the need to recompile queries. After all, they are already available. Using stored procedures during the process of accessing data has diverse advantages. Several advantages are associated with stored procedures.
While stored procedures do not require the execution of queries each time an individual wants to access data, there are instances when using an ad hoc query is essential. Stored procedures can usually be accessed by other individuals using the database. Therefore, they can alter the code without the knowledge of the initial user. This can be disadvantageous where security is required. Therefore, in such instances, using ad hoc queries is recommended because other people will not access the queries. The user will be able to execute the queries whenever they want to access the specific information from the database. Stored procedures are also reported to have a disadvantage (Morris, 2012). When the statements are compiled, they can only be executed within one database. Additionally, storing the procedures also uses more memory in the server.
When stored procedures are used, there is enhanced performance. Since the process is compiled and stored in a form that c...
