Question 1
In your own words, provide a definition of a stressor in the context of space travel.
A stressor refers to an environmental factor or stimulus that affects physical and mental health of a person (Week 7 PPT, slide 4). In the context of space travel, a stressor is a stimulus such as ionizing radiation, constant danger, ambient noise, and temperature that negatively affect an individual during space exploration (Week 7 PPT, Slides 5, 6, and7).
Question 2
In your own words, provide a definition of stress in the context of space travel.
In the context of space travel, stress is a response produced by environmental factors or stressors in an individual’s body (Week 7 PPT, Slide 4). This response causes a feeling of physical or emotional tension during space exploration.
Question 3
From the list of possible answer provided below, select all that are considered to be psychological space stressors for space travelers. (Select all that apply)
Bone loss and muscle atrophy
Unreasonable demands for too much work
* Confinement to a small indoor space (Week 7 PPT, slide 7)
Loud noise and vibration during launch
Microgravity

Question 4
Do you think the following situation would be classified as a stressor to an average space travel, yes or no? If yes, what kind of stressor? Explain your answer.
A fellow crew member insists on repetitively playing the same five Hank Williams (American Country and Western songwriter and singer whose peak of popularity was decades ago) songs over and over on the cabin’s audio system whenever they are awake and every song is audible to the rest of the crew.
Yes, I think the scenario above would be classified as a psychological stressor to an average space travel. The fact that a fellow crew member insists on repetitively playing the same songs over and over in the cabin’s audio system is a form of boredom (Week 7 PPT, Slide 8). Most of the members of the cabin are likely to get bored when they hear the same song repetitively. Studies have shown that those who experience boredom often tend to have more anxiety and are at a high risk of stress and depression. Changing the music genre or the songs would reduce this boredom. However, the level of boredom would increase if the cabin member insists on playing the same song over and over.
Question 5
From the list of answers provided below, select all of them that are considered to be physical space stressors for space travelers. (Select all that apply) (Week 7 slides)
