Key Point Summary Assignment
As you write your key point summary assignment for Module 1, please first define the key term and then share how you plan to improve as a competent communicator in each of the selected areas. Key points can include vocabulary words, concepts, and/or theories from the text. You will also need to use the template provided for this assignment via eCampus and review the rubric. Use this activity to (1) become self-reflective about the module readings and (2) demonstrate that you understand the concepts presented in the text. Be sure to include at least five sentences or more in each paragraph.
You are required to summarize five key points of your choice from the chapters in module one. Be thorough in defining and providing the practical application for each of your key points. I'm looking for a deep level of critical thought in your summaries, as well as your ability to connect this assignment to your desire to improve as a competent communicator. You are to write a minimum of two paragraphs for each of your key points (1) the first paragraph should define the concept, while (2) the second should explain how you plan to improve your communication in the selected area. Each paragraph should include at least five sentences or more.
Attached you will find the required template for the key point assignment(s) and you should use this template throughout the remainder of the course. Finally, be sure to list the page number for each of your selected concepts.
Example: If you took interest in learning about ethnocentrism from chapter 2, you could list that as a key point by defining it and providing insight through an in-depth summary of the concept.

Understanding and appreciating the unique communication and behavioral styles of persons from various cultural backgrounds is central to the concept of cultural defense. Understanding that what may be considered objectionable in one culture may be viewed differently in another is essential. I intend to learn more about other societies' linguistic and cultural norms to hone my abilities in this area. Reading books, attending lectures, and interacting with people from different walks of life all count as ways to broaden one's horizons. I will actively avoid stereotyping others based on their cultural background and listen to them without interjecting my cultural assumptions. Doing so demonstrates an awareness of the significance of appreciating and making room for the perspectives of people from various cultural backgrounds.

People from diverse walks of life can learn from and contribute to one another when communicating effectively across cultural boundaries. The first step is getting comfortable interacting and working with people from different cultural backgrounds. Examples include linguistics, cultural practices, and religious beliefs. Getting to know people from many walks of life will help me develop my skills.
