Two months ago, Facebook collaborated with Ray-Ban and launched the first-generation story glass series. Wyndham (2021) argues that although innovative glass technology could revolutionize the content creation industry through real-time navigation attributed to augmented reality, it can infringe on people's privacy. According to the author, Ray-Ban stories glasses allow users to capture pictures, record videos and make calls in a sneaky way (Wyndham, 2021). The discreet cameras are invisible to non-users, further exacerbating Facebook's privacy and data infringement issues. Therefore, Facebook and Ray-Ban should solve this privacy dilemma to protect people's critical data and information like pictures from being used without their consent.
Facebook and Ray-Ban smart glasses have one primary ethical implication. These smart glasses undermine people's privacy because the smart glasses have small and discreet cameras that only the users know. Therefore, non-users can have their pictures, voices, video captured by users without their knowledge or consent. The multi-million Facebook Company has experienced several privacy concerns and lawsuits in recent years, and this invention could further worsen their situation and reputation. Besides, some individuals may use smart glasses to stalk other people exposing them to significant harm. Although Facebook maintains that the Ray-Ban glass series fosters privacy, including the LED light that shows other people whether it is recording, it is highly likely no go unnoticed, especially in hot weather.
