The painting depicts a European girl looking over her shoulder and gazing at the viewer with slightly parted lips. She wears an exotic dress, a Turkish turban, and pearl earrings. The girl in the painting is unknown, hence the mystery, but she manages to connect with the viewers over time through her gaze intimately, therefore, a sense of drama. The painting is sometimes referred to as ‘the Dutch Mona Lisa’ as she and Mona Lisa seem to carry an air of mystery around them. Johannes Vermeer made the image around 1665.
Artistic Movement
The painting was made during the Dutch Golden Age: a period in the 17th century when the Netherlands experienced artistic prosperity. As a result, artists found inspiration from the Northern Renaissance painting techniques, and the artworks of this era depicted more advanced painting techniques. Some researchers even argue that Vermeer used a camera obscura (a device that could project an image on a flat surface) to capture the detailed painting of the girly girl's face. In addition, the painting is a tronie (a picture that portrays facial characteristics, usually intended for a study) instead of a portrait. Tronies were popular in the Dutch Golden Era and showed women in exotic garments.
Stylistic Influences
Vermeer used oil painting to bring the girl-girl to life. He employed light rather than lines to create contours and forms. This concept is evident in the face where he has used light and shadow to express the girly girl's soft skin and bright eyes (Van Loon et al., 2019. He used a four-step layering technique popular in the Golden era to paint the girl-girl. He created the first layer of the painting with a light color followed by a monochromatic underpainting.
