Registered Nurses (RN) must be display cultural competence, it has been noted that cultural aspects allows the medical practitioners to be open to the world views of the patients, this is made possible by understanding the patient individual cases and avoiding misapplication and stereotyping of the scientific knowledge (Ballatt & Campling, 2011 p. 107). Cultural competence as observed by RN in the labor and delivery allows seeing the right picture, and at the same time assists in improving the healthcare quality and the outcomes of the treatments (Rundle et al, 2002 p. 177).
Culture calls for respect to the practices and beliefs of the patients and other medical practitioners. It is important for the RNs to understand the behaviors of the patients that are influenced by the cultural aspects, which the patients hold so dearly (Betancourt et al, 2002 p. 17). Filling initial assessment forms, gives the right picture if the patients cultural aspects and are put into play. Different people hold diverse beliefs on the processes of labor and birth.
