It is no doubt that the impact of climate change is pervasive. Climate change is affecting every part of our lives, from the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the food we consume. Excessive demand for foods has pushed farmers into using excessive fertilizers to improve their yields, climate change and contributing to sporadic and extreme weather. Increase deforestation has contributed to soil erosion and increased water contamination from fertilizer being washed away.
Today California residents suffer from poor quality water. California residents have been without clean tap water for almost a decade now (People). Residents have been forced to purchase bottled water for drinking and cooking in their homes. The tap water contains high levels of nitrates that sips the ground from livestock manure and fertilizer from farms. Furthermore, disinfectants such as chlorine used to sanctify water are suspected to increase the pollution of the tap water when it reacts with manure components, further exacerbating the situation. Residents believe that drinking tap water poses a significant health risk to their lives as they increase the chances of non-communicable diseases such as cancer, respiratory diseases, kidney failure, etc. Over the years, the community has witnessed increased illness and deaths related to consuming polluted substances.
California residents are quite vulnerable due to the high cost of living and the increasing unemployment rates. Apart from the $130 water bill, residents complain that they still need to spend almost $30 on bottled water monthly. This has even worsened after the pandemic, where most residents lost their jobs because of the coronavirus pandemic that resulted in strict lock-downs. Besides, residents complain of spending valuable time making trips to go and buy water while they could have spent that time on something meaningful like working or being with their loved ones.
Across the United States, many people drink unsafe water unsuspectingly because limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are too high since the polluted water they drink is too small to fit the standards under EPA regulations. In addition, it is estimated that 20 percent of privates wells that do not fall under EPA regulations have pollution levels exceeding the standards set by EPA. Furthermore, nitrates are just a fraction of the pollutants present in drinking water.
