Eleanor Roosevelt was the wife to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor was a leader in her own right and she involved herself in various humanitarian causes throughout her life. It is important to note that as a long political partner to her husband, Eleanor Roosevelt also focused on establishing her personal political network and she also developed her own liberal ideologies. This paper examines the promotion of women rights, enhancing connections with the African-American communities and working as an advocate for the people as examples of the reforms that were supported by Eleanor Roosevelt.
Eleanor Roosevelt was determined to promoting the rights of American Women. Just like the other many women who took the leadership of Women’s movements, Eleanor was aware of the challenges that women faced. She interacted with women from all over the world under different circumstances. After the formation of the Presidential Commission of the Status of Women in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt headed the effort. She spearheaded the efforts of finding discriminatory provisions in the law and practices of industry, labor and governmental organizations, the commission proposed changes which were aimed at promoting women’s opportunities in the United States. The commission suggested changes in areas such as employment practices, benefit policies affecting women’s income and the labor laws among other essential areas.[The American Yawp, 2013. "27.
