Data collection on recycling material and waste management in building renovation and demolition was collected using a questionnaire. The questionnaire encompassed many areas, including recycling materials, renovations, and demolition waste disposal. The questionnaire captured data on the roles and experiences of the interviews. Data relating to the interviewee's number of years of experience were captured, including the sizes of the companies they work for. More information was gathered regarding the nature of the companies by identifying them as demolition contractors, architects, engineers, sub-contractors, and others.
The interviewees supplied information on their experiences in renovation and recycling over the past five years. Other related questions sought to find the ease of recycling the following materials; wood, glass, concrete, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and masonry. In the recycling of demolition material, information on which materials are difficult to recycle and the reasons were gathered. In addition, the questionnaire had a cost component, where interviewees disclosed the estimated cost of total demolition materials from the total construction cost and the estimated additional cost incurred in recycling compared to landfill disposal of construction waste. Moreover, the questionnaire captured the methods used by the study population in identifying recyclable materials.
Information was gathered about the software used by the interviewees to help improve the recycling of materials. Consequently, participants supplied information on the determinants of the reuse of recyclable materials in a building, whether time and cost, market demand, site conditions, technique level, and quality play a role. In addition, key personnel in charge of demolition waste disposal were asked to establish who decides who makes the collection of recycled materials. The quality of the recycled material is a major concern. Therefore, the determinants used to evaluate the quality of recycled material were included. Furthermore, opinions on how sustainable renovation is over total demolition and opinion on the life span of the recycled material were recorded. Recycling technologies are crucial in the study. As a result, questions to establish the recycling technologies that can enhance the recycling of materials and the expected recycling process in the next five years formed part of the survey.
However, there needs to be more data on the environmental impact of recycling building materials; the likely environmental effects of recycling needs to be detailed.
