The responsibility of saving people’s lives who are in danger due to some fire incident lies on the firefighters; therefore, it was necessary to select and recruit only strong and strengthful candidates for the firefighting jobs (Nichols, 2019). The selection and recruitment criteria were based on the recruitment test. In this recruitment test, the candidates had to undergo several phases of manifesting physical and mental strength. The scientists of the University of Victoria framed the criteria to assess the psychological and physical strength of the candidates before selecting them for such a crucial job.
While smoke-combating, smoke-jumpers are responsible for saving people’s and colleagues’ lives; therefore, they must be vigilant, quick, and mentally stable to make abrupt decisions to save people (Innes & Clarke, 1985). The selection mechanism was kept the same for all sexes to sustain the international standards, which certainly enhanced the performance of the firefighters. The candidates were trained using the latest tactics and motivated to uplift their performances in real-time scenarios. The safety standards were maintained and kept higher to ensure the safety of endangered people and their colleagues. There was no special arrangement to keep the women firefighters away from their jobs.
The smoke-jumpers earn a handsome amount for providing their services. High salaries are one of the prime reasons behind the extensive job applications for this job. The recruiting department of the smoke-fighting curtails the applicant rush by scrutinizing them through different criteria (Anonymous, n.d). The scrutiny mechanism is the same for all, and there seems to be no discrimination against women. Due to the strict hiring process, the crew of smoke-jumpers has extensive expertise in dealing with deadly situations to save people’s lives. The standard of hiring crew members has always been higher, sensing the responsibility of this job.
