Introduction
The Young Urban Farmers is an enterprise that empowers people to enjoy growing and feeding on nutritious vegetables and fruits from their yard, balcony, and rooftop gardens. It aims at sustaining urban living through sustainable sources of food for all urban dwellers to curb the problem of food insecurity (Young Urban Farmers, 2017). The organization achieves this by helping people set up and manage different types of gardens at a fee and turn them into sustainable food sources. The initiative works with urban dwellers, schools, restaurants, and institutions willing to venture into urban gardening, with the organization offering their expertise at a feed.
The Toronto Green Community is an enterprise whose mission is to help and support different communities in Toronto to develop an environmentally sustainable city through neighborhood initiatives, education, and engagement. The organization, founded by Jacky Kennedy and Rita Banach in 1995, acknowledges the health and welfare effects of environmental issues such as pollution, lack of food, access to green space, and high energy costs imposed on communities in Toronto (Toronto Green Community, 2021). It achieves this by engaging the community in maintaining community gardens for food sustenance. It organizes public walks along buried waterways to establish how society can support these systems. Also, it creates awareness of indigenous stories as an aspect of nurturing the city. The organization works with local community volunteers and partners with the government and neighborhood companies such as Toronto Renewable Energy cooperation and Auto Share.
Feed It Forward is a not-for-profit organization operating in Toronto, Canada. The social enterprise was founded in 2014 by Chef Jagger Gordon, a chef in Toronto and caterer specializing in gastronomy. The former serviceman who traveled to over thirty-two countries fighting wars observed numerous vices, including food wastage. Thus, when he settled in Toronto, went to culinary school, and began working in kitchens, he noted that the problem was also prevalent. In his observation, about 53% of all foods in Canada ended up in landfills (Feed It Forward, 2020). Thus, he birthed the idea of the social enterprise, Feed It Forward. Its main aim was to offer food to the food insecure Canadians and to lessen food wastage. The enterprise works by rescuing foods from restaurants, cafes, bakeries, grocery stores, and local food manufacturing industries, which would have otherwise ended up discarded. Toronto residents access groceries at low prices or take others for free through the “pay what you can” grocery store, bakery, and coffee shop. The Humber College soup bar offers 40% off to food-insecure college students and bottomless soup two days a week. The enterprise runs a farm in Greenwood, where they grow foods to be offered in their stores. The team also runs a Blazing kitchen to prepare the foods and distribute them to needy residents (Feed It Forward, 2020).
