Sexual assault case:
• Issac, an 18-year-old, is brutally beaten and sexually assaulted by a man not known to him on his way home from a party in an unfamiliar part of town. He is found semiconscious by a passerby and taken to the ED. He has extensive bruises on his head, chest, and buttocks and anal tears. The nurse (a rape counselor) works with Issac using the hospital rape protocol.
• Issac appears stunned and confused and has difficulty focusing on what the nurse is saying. He says repeatedly, “This is crazy, this can’t be happening…I can’t believe this has happened to me…Oh, my God, I can’t believe this.”
a. What are the nurse’s assessment priorities?
