The case study for Chapter 6 of Environmental Ethics for Canadians illustrates the proposition that there are environmental issues that affect just one gender. In this case, the dioxin in breast milk and its dangers to women and breastfeeding infants have been discussed from an ecofeminism incentive. The main argument is that the presence of such environmental issues requires women to be at the forefront of environmental activism.
A better understanding of this argument can be achieved by exploring a few themes discussed in the chapter. The first is the ecofeminist theme, which entails applying feminist principles and ideologies to ecological issues. Karen Warren has described a feminist issue in Chapter 6 as an issue that plays a critical role in the oppression of women (Williston, 2016). Therefore, ecofeminism can broadly be described as feminist movements that seek to address the environmental issues that affect women. Besides the case of Canada and India presented in this chapter, ecofeminism has been used in other regions effectively. For example, a case of Africa has been presented by Bornwnhill and Turner (2019), who argue that African women have successfully defended the commodification of the commons through ecofeminist politics. The example given is that of female coffee farmers refusing debt and penury conditions of the global supply chain and preferring self-provisioning. Ecofeminism is shown to be a critical tool for addressing ecological issues with special implications on the wellbeing of women.
