RE: A proposal to Not Use the Real-name System
THE PURPOSE
We propose the real-name system by website designers and developers should not be used to solve online rumors problems. The implementation of this system will prompt people to take responsibility for what they say online. A real-name system ensures that there is accountability among internet users. However, implementing this system will only be beneficial in the short run since it will not fully eradicate the problem.
THE PROBLEM
Information can now spread faster and further than it was years before because of online social media expansion. The already established power structures have been shaken by the citizens' ability to contribute and access real-time news cycles. An online wave of social interaction, network building, and personal identity has increased the opportunities for expression. Some forms of expression may cause destruction and can be dangerous to society. Terrorists, deviants, and fraudsters may make others feel insecure and disrupt the existing social order. Governments around the world have employed various methods to ensure that irresponsible forms of speech are removed from the internet. Others have considered implementing systems that require internet users to have their real names registered before publishing any comments or opinions on the internet.
My team is trying to determine whether we should apply a real-name system or not. Using the real-name system means that there will be a violation of the user's privacy. Individuals who keep this information will also be in a problem as users may be harmed if the information is not stored safely. In this case, three options will guide us in this dilemma. The options include the following.
* Option 1: Utilizing the real-name system to track users
* Option 2: Utilizing the real-name system on the willing users
* Option 3: Not utilizing the real-name system
This is an ethical dilemma because if the first option is something to go by, it means that the website will violate the ACM code of conduct and jeopardize users' privacy. The second option calls for not using the real-name system to protect the privacy of the users. However, in this case, the online rumors will be inundated. The website will also be violating the ACM code the states that all people are stakeholders in computing. We greatly recommend the third option that does not agree with the utilization of the real-name system.
THE SOLUTION
We think that the best framework that should be used for this ethical dilemma is the principle of utilitarianism. This principle also coincides with the third option that we will be using in this discussion. Let us first discuss the main tenets of the utilitarian theory.
Utilitarianism is a form of consequentialism. Utilitarianism is used to answer the fundamental question, “Do ends justify the means?”. Consequentialism states that the wrongness or rightness of an act is dependent on the consequences it produces at the end.
As a utilitarian, inactions and actions that only benefit few people and potentia...
