Understanding the Court System
The United States is a federal system governed by a central federal government together with individual governments for every state. One thing most countries around the world is arms of government which help in running a country. Every state in The United States of America has its judicial system with state courts. On the other hand, federal courts are for the states in general. There are differences between the various court systems and the federal courts although the two share some similarities. Cases are filed and tried in judicial systems if the states which have its courts. The decisions made by the courts depend on the subject matter or even geographical system. When a party loses, they may decide to file for an appeal at a higher court. An appeal usually means that the court has made a mistake in its ruling. However, the Supreme courts choose whether to listen to the appeals or not. The essay discusses the American Court System using an example of a criminal case.
Criminal law deals with crime and behavior that is seen to be harmful or can endanger the lives of people or lead to the destruction of property. In criminal law, there is also punishment for anyone who has violated the rules of criminal statutes (Carp, Stidham, Manning, & Holmes, 2016). There have been multiple criminal cases tried in the United States. Some of these cases have been recognized internationally. This is either because of the parties involved or the act of crime itself. An example of a criminal case that received international recognition and was closely followed by the public was the O.J Simpson case. The O. J. Simpson murder case officially referred to as People of the State of California v. Orenthal James Simpson was held at the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
The famous actor and NFL player were tried on two counts of murder. This is because his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend who worked as a waiter at a restaurant, Ron Goldman were found stabbed to death outside his condo. The team that represented Simpson was highly profiled and was referred to as the Dream Team. This is because the people in the defense team included Robert Kardashian and Robert Shapiro. Cochran, a member of the defense team, managed to convince the jury that the DNA evidence may have been compromised and accused the Los Angeles Police Department of misconduct (Curtis & Hereward, 2017). After lasting for eleven months, Simpson was found not guilty. Later, the family members of the dead victims filed a lawsuit, and Simpson was found guilty by the jury. The families were awarded $33.5 million to serve as compensation. It seems like Simpson was meant to spend jail time as he was sentenced on weapon and robbery charges 13 years later.
The prosecutors were accusing Simpson without the proper evidence. For example, nobody saw any blood on a pair of socks collected from his bedroom until two months into the case. The de...
