1. Why are problems with communications so commonplace in the management of large-scale disasters? What can be done to limit these problems in the future?
During large disasters, communication problems are inevitable when managing these occurrences. In particular, when a disaster occurs, multiple agencies from the local, state, and federal governments are supposed to work in close collaboration with each other. As such, since they use different communication media, there is a high likelihood of misinformation, misinterpretation, and misunderstanding. When it comes to reporting the up-to-date information about the disaster, without a centralized communication system, responders might give distinct data that can create confusion. However, to limit communication problems during emergencies, there should be a centralized body with the primary purpose of reporting what is happening. Responders need to use the same channel of communication so that they can interact with each other and cooperate in saving lives. Moreover, the media should not broadcast information without proper evidence.
3. How important is cross-departmental training? Explain your answer.
Cross-agency or departmental training enhances a successful disaster management process. Specifically, the success of restoring the disaster-stricken community to normalcy depends on how different agencies, on the ground, collaborate. For instance, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) should be able to work with local agencies who understand the community well. Cross-departmental training creates unity, togetherness, and promote cooperation between different responders. For this reason, they work as one unit destined to help the community involved. Since all agencies play their roles well and in collaboration with one another, all their efforts bear fruits.
4. Should the United States Government spend more money on response capabilities or preparedness and mitigation? Why?
The American government need to use more resources on disaster mitigation and preparedness. In reality, it would be hard to respond to a particular emergency without having relevant equipment, training, and appropriate organizational structure.
