Instructions
Choose a composer who has been mentioned as part of the history materials we’ve
been studying for Part II, and create a 1,000 word case-study exploring the biography
and select musical works of the composer. You should relate their life and work as
best as you can to the broader musical trends, social attitudes and historical events
of their time.
Tips
To get the best grades for this work, you must:
- Make sure your answer is at least 1,000 words.
- Make sure you address ALL THREE THEMES (biography, attitudes and events,
musical trends).
- Refer to musical examples.
- E.g. If you wanted to make the case that C.P.E. Bach influenced Haydn, refer to
some pieces of C.P.E. Bach and some pieces of Haydn that sound similar to you
and explain as best you can what you think the similarities are.
- Cite your sources.
- You can use any citation format you wish, but I need to be able to see which
information comes from which source (i.e. footnotes or author-date, or similar).
- DON’T USE WIKIPEDIA.
- Try to come up with at least a few things I didn’t already say in the
presentations if you can. You will need to do some research for this paper (and
cite as needed!!)

- Were there any wars, famines or other big events?
- Did anything happen with the church, the government or other authorities?
- Were there any epochal changes to society around that time (for example, the
emergence of capitalism, or changing role of the church, etc, etc)?
- Musical trends
- How was their music received at the time?
- Was it talked about or ignored?
- Was it well-received or did it cause riots?
- Was the music in keeping with broader musical trends of the time or did it buck
them? Did it do both?
- Think of examples of how the music is different to what was going on at the
same time, and also how it might be similar.
- Did they know and interact with any other composers?
- How did those composers influence them (or vice versa)?
- Were they in a particular group or sphere of influence? (like The Five or The
Second Viennese school, for example).
Extra Credit
For up to 10 points extra credit, produce a timeline of the composer’s life (either by
hand and photographed / scanned in, or on the computer). Include important life
events as well as the composition dates of important pieces. Points will be awarded for
good presentation as well as the information.

Ludwig van Beethoven was an influential pianists and composers of his time. The individual was born on December 16, 1770, at a place called Bonn, Germany. During that time, Bonn acted as the capital city of the Electorate of Cologne. The composer was a crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in western culture of music. The individual was a talented musician who, despite encountering many obstacles in his life, emerged as the most significant composer of all time who will live to be remembered even today. The paper focuses on Beethoven’s biography, musical trends, and the historical events and social attitudes of his time.
Biographical Information
As stated earlier, Beethoven was born on December 16, 1770, and he was baptized the following day since it was the custom. His death occurred on March 26, 1827. The individual was brought up in Bonn, where his family resided. Maria Magdalena was Beethoven’s mother, and Johann van Beethoven was his father. The person had two brothers, Nikolaus Johann and Caspar Anton Carl, who was born in October 1776 and April 1774, respectively (Bach Cantatas Website, n.d.). Although Beethoven was brought up in Bonn, he migrated to Vienna when he was around twenty-years-old to study music with Joseph Haydn. Indeed, it was during this time that he started losing his sense of hearing, which left him completely deaf in the end. Beethoven’s family did not travel. However, only him who went to Vienna in 1787 for a short period before his mother got severely ill and died (Bach Cantatas Website, n.d.). From that time, Beethoven was forced to stay at home to look after his two small brothers since his father was an alcoholic and did not take care of them. The individual’s place of birth had a significant impact on his music. For example, it was in Bonn, where Beethoven obtained crucial lessons about being a composer and a pianist. In particular, his father was his first music teacher, who was harsh to him. At some point, he made Beethoven step on a stool in tears so that he can reach keyboard keys. Other people who significantly influenced Beethoven’s music career were Gilles van den Eeden, the court organist, Franz Rovantini, a family member and a violinist, and Tobias Pfeiffer, a pianist and a friend.
Numerous things happened in Beethoven’s life, which impacted his music. First, his harsh father made him master essential lessons in music since he did not give him a room for making mistakes. In reality, he had the best interest of his son at heart, and he knew that Beethoven was talented and that he needed to be nurtured. Second, the death of Beethoven’s mother significantly affected his music since he did not return to Vienna, where he had gone to learn more about music. Instead, Beethoven took the duty of taking care of his brothers. Third, Beethoven became deaf, which motivated him to perform and compose more songs. In other words, his hearing disability did not hinder him from continuing with music performance.
