Introduction
Mental illness is a condition found in most of the population and is often attributable to either mental or behavioral disorders. There is a high mortality rate attributable to neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression, disorders related to alcohol consumption, bipolar, and schizophrenia. Cases of mental disorders can at least be found in one out of four families, with the immediate family members being the caregivers for those with mental issues. Notably, those with mental illnesses always incur costs associated with both social alongside mental health. This also includes falling victims of discrimination, human rights abuse, including internal and external dejection (WHO, 2019).
The high rate of mortality due to mental illness is attributable to various factors such as poor parental care, lack of medication adherence, and lack of access to adequate healthcare information on mental illness (Levenson, 2017). The majority of healthcare consumers in the area of mental illness find it difficult to access and evaluate healthcare information due to the lack of appropriate devices and infrastructure that can aid in communication. The majority of the people lack healthcare information regarding services such as proper prescription of medicine, diet, and other healthcare services.
In mental illness, the mind's various normal functioning is always affected due to a series of signs alongside condition experiences (Australian Association of Social Workers, 2020). The various condition experiences include phobias, schizophrenia, anxiety, mania, depression, including substance abuse disorders. Peter's bipolar condition could be attributable to a combination of genetics since his late father also suffered the same alteration of the brain structure, chemistry, and surrounding environment. Therefore, the reason for Peter's condition may be either psychological or social. Therefore, social workers and medical professions utilize a bio-psycho-social approach while dealing with such cases as Peter's condition.
Case Study Perspective
As per the case study, Peter is facing mental illness relating to a psychological issue. The causes are numerous, which might have been notions of discrimination from the family that may have increased the severity of the mental illness. In addition, the condition increased owing to his use of drugs such as cigarettes and cannabis. Therefore, Peter may have suffered from the condition owing to unfulfilled social desires, the status of mental agony, including social isolation. The aspect of social detachment leads to hallucinations, whereby the victim watches imaginary things out of their perceptions on several occasions (Denollet et al., 2021).
The social worker should first recognize that Peter is a human being by nature with biological, social, and psychological needs (Denollet et al., 2021).
