Managing Health Care Professionals Case Study:

Dr. O’Connor was known for his hot temper and drinking. Although he claimed never to come to work under the influence, nurses, physicians, and other coworkers had their doubts, and several expressed their alarm to their supervisors. Dr. O’Connor would often berate employees and make derogatory remarks to employees who are of different ethnicities and of the Muslim faith. The emergency room needed coverage, and it was hard to find physicians who would work the graveyard shift, so little was done to address these concerns. One night, Dr. O’Connor made a remark to an employee who had had enough and an argument ensued in the emergency room in front of patients. The dispute concluded with Dr. O’Connor aggressively screaming and yelling in the employee’s personal space, spewing threats of physical harm.

Introduction
Managing healthcare professionals is a fundamental role of administrators in hospital settings. Different experts have diverse behaviors, personal values, attitudes, and likes and dislikes. As a result, the administrator has a critical responsibility to create a working environment where various specialized individuals deliver appropriate health services to the patients. They also ensure that these persons maintain professional conduct irrespective of their education levels and other differences for seamless interactions with other healthcare employees. In this context, the administrator should remain vigilant of individuals violating set cooperation standards and induce appropriate disciplinary measures to streamline the work settings and maintain professionalism. Thus, Dr. O’Connor’s case represents incidences that require an administrator to intervene and recommend appropriate actions to avert tension among healthcare workers.
Key Facts in the Case Study
The primary aspect emerging from this case study is that Dr. O’Connor already has an established history of being drunk and hot-tempered. His colleagues have expressed concern about this attitude and noted that he reports working drunk despite his opposition regarding this accusation. The concerning aspect is that despite the workers reporting the issue to their supervisors, they continued to ignore the gravity of the matter, allowing his problem to fester. As a result, ignoring the issue exposed other healthcare workers to a hostile working environment. They had to stomach the constant berating and derogatory remarks targeting their ethnicities and religions from Dr. O’Connor. His case was also approached with some leniency because of his willingness to cover the emergency room shifts. However, this condoning tendency only worsened the situation leading to the escalation of the problem that negatively affected the patients.
How I would Handle the Situation as an Administrator Managing Dr. O’Connor’s Department
Critically approaching this situation would be fundamental in ensuring that one de-escalates the issues to avert the continued worsening of the conflict. The central aspect is to ensure that I provide equal opportunities for all individuals to present their cases, including the aggrieved employee, the patients, and Dr. O’Connor. The insights arising from this information would confirm who the instigator of the confrontation was and plan to institute appropriate measures. Moreover, integrating past complaints will be fundamental in addressing this situation to avoid a band-aid approach. While identifying a lasting solution, affirming the importance of professionalism during communication will be critical to demonstrate that such behavior is reprehensible to all workers and patients (Forbat & Barclay, 2018). The next step is to suspend the culprit pending the implementation of sustainable solutions. Thus, de-escalation is the primary conflict management technique I would use ...
