The study starts by recognizing that a high number of hospitalizations and mortalities annually are attributed to seasonal influenza. The disease still poses a significant public health threat despite continued influenza vaccination campaigns. Healthy adolescents and children are central to introducing and transmitting influenza into their households and the community. Based on previous studies, the authors established that vaccination of school-going children might lower the transmission rate of influence, thus augmenting health outcomes. Some evidence suggests that immunization of healthy children leads to herd protection, with significant health benefits for the unvaccinated population (Wang et al., 2016). This study was tailored to address a paucity of research on the subject matter, especially regarding the relationship between influenza vaccination and infection rate in the wider population. The following hypotheses can be derived from this problem:
H1: Influenza vaccination of school-going children reduced the infection rate among the unvaccinated population in Hutterite communities.
H0: Influenza immunization of school-going children did not reduce the infection rate among the unvaccinated population in Hutterite communities.
The researchers employed a quantitative research method to understand the association between influenza vaccination and the infection rate in the community. Given that the study included both adult and underage participants, it was increasingly difficult to use a mixed-methods approach (Patel et al., 2016). Therefore, the methodology corresponds to the research question as the researchers employed Cox proportional hazards regression model to evaluate vaccine efficacy.
Identification of Sample Population and Sampling Techniques
The researchers enrolled 4,640 participants derived from 65 colonies over the three seasons to inform the study.
