Case Study Discussion
Discussion
Purpose
The purpose of the graded collaborative discussions is to engage faculty and students in an interactive dialogue to assist the student in organizing, integrating, applying, and critically appraising knowledge regarding psychopharmacology. Scholarly information obtained from credible sources as well as professional communication are required. Application of information to professional experiences promotes the analysis and use of principles, knowledge, and information learned and related to real-life professional situations. Meaningful dialogue among faculty and students fosters the development of a learning community as ideas, perspectives, and knowledge are shared.
Course Outcomes
This discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
CO3:Apply knowledge of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in prescribing psychopharmacotherapy. (PO 1)
CO4: Analyze factors pertinent to making the most effective drug selection for a client with a specific diagnosis in the mental health care setting. (POs 1, 2)
CO5: Identify the most commonly prescribed agents in the major psychopharmacologic drug classes. (POs 1, 2),
CO6: Analyze client indicators of therapeutic, ineffective, adverse responses and side effects to psychopharmacotherapy. (PO 1)
Due Date
Initial posts are due to the discussion board by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Instructor and peer responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Students must post on a minimum of two separate days. A 10% late penalty will be imposed for discussions posted after the deadline Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT, regardless of the number of days late. NOTHING will be accepted after 11:59 p.m. MT on Sunday (i.e., the student will receive an automatic 0).
Total Points Possible
This assignment is worth a total of 100 points.
Preparing the Discussion
Review the announcements for your assigned case study.
1. Application of Course Knowledge
Select one drug to treat the diagnosis(es) or symptoms.
List medication class and mechanism of action for the chosen medication.
Write the prescription in prescription format.
Provide an evidence-based source and rationale for the selected medication using at least one scholarly Textbooks may be used for additional references but are not the prima
List any side effects or adverse effects associated with the medication.
Include any required diagnostic testing. State the time frame for this testing (testing is before medication initiation or every 3 months, etc.). Includes normal results range for any listed laboratory tests.
Provide a minimum of three appropriate medication-related teaching points for the client and/or family.
2.  Integration of Evidence: The student post provides support from a minimum of one scholarly in-text citation in addition to the textbook.
3. Engagement in Meaningful Dialogue: The student responds to a student peer and course faculty to further dialogue.
Peer Response: The student responds substantively to at least one topic-related post by a student peer who discussed a different drug than the student’s initial post. A substantive post adds content or insights or asks a question that will add to the learning experience and/or generate discussion.
Faculty Response: The student responds substantively to at least one question by course faculty. The faculty question may be directed to the student, to another student, or the entire class.
4. Professionalism in Communication: The post presents information in a logical, meaningful, and understandable sequence, and is relevant to the discussion topic.
Grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation are accurate.
Good writing calls for the limited use of direct quotes. Direct quotes in discussions are to be limited to one short quotation (not to exceed 10 words). The quote must add substantively to the discussion.
5. Reference Citation: References have complete information as required by APA (0-1 errors). In-text citations included for all references, AND references are included for all in-text citations (0 errors).
6. Wednesday Participation Requirement: The student provides a substantive response to the graded discussion question(s) or topic(s), posted by the course faculty (not a response to a peer), by Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. MT of each week.
7. Total Participation Requirement: The student provides at least three substantive posts (one to the initial question or topic, one to a student peer, and one to a faculty question) on two different days during the week.

1 Select one drug to treat the diagnosis(es) or symptoms.
Methylphenidate has been recommended to treat ADHD, with a Grade B, strong recommendation. The researchers also marked medications approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration as Grade A, a strong recommendation for patients between 6 to 12 years old (Wolraich et al., 2019). The patient, in this case, is six years old and methylphenidate and amphetamine are the first-line medications recommended for ADHD in children (Verghese & Abdijadid, 2022).
2 List medication class and mechanism of action for the chosen medication.
Methylphenidate belongs to the class of drugs called central nervous system stimulants. It acts on dopamine and norepinephrine transporters to inhibit the action of these and binds to 5-hydroxytryptamine-1A (5-HT1A) receptors to increase their activity. Both actions increase dopamine and norepinephrine availability in the extracellular space central nervous system, enhancing cortical excitability since these two binds to alpha-2 adrenergic receptors (Faraone, 2018).

4 Provide an evidence-based source and rationale for the selected medication using at least one scholarly Textbooks may be used for additional references but are not the primary reference.
Methylphenidate is a psychostimulant that may be used to treat catecholamine-release dysfunctions (Stahl, 2021). Childress et al. (2020) studied the effects of the extended-release tablets of the drug on the main symptoms of ADHD. The results revealed that the drug could lessen the symptoms with a rapid onset and longer duration of action.
5 List any side effects or adverse effects associated with the medication.
The most common adverse effects include upper abdominal pain, labile affect, reduced appetite, irritability, sleep dysfunction, and headache (Childress et al., 2020). Some serious adverse effects of methylphenidate include the induction of psychosis, seizures, cerebral arteritis, mood disorders such as major depressive disorder, dyskinesia, and hepatic failure (Storebø et al., 2018).
6 Include any required diagnostic testing. State the time frame for this testing (testing is before medication initiation or every three months, etc.). Includes normal results range for any listed laboratory tests.
There is no single test required for the...
