1 What was the case about?
The case was about Del and Sarah, a previously happily married couple, both heterosexual, who began having problems due to Del’s alcohol use disorder. As claimed by Sarah, initially, both of them enjoy drinking with their friends occasionally, and it did not seem to be a problem. However, Del started to drink more than usual until he drank alcoholic beverages most days and most of the time a day.
2 Whom did it involve?
The case involved the married couple, Del and Sarah, their children and grandchildren, and friends. The primary people of concern are Del and Sarah. Sarah, the wife, started to have concerns about Del’s behavior after he started to become addicted to alcoholic beverages. Conversely, Del, the husband, did not see anything wrong with his drinking sprees and actions whenever he was drunk.
3 What happened in the case?
In this case, Del and Sarah both drank alcoholic beverages with their friends occasionally and in moderation on every occasion. However, Del developed alcohol tolerance and started to drink most days a week and most times a day. The problem between the two emerged as the enjoyment of drinking had been lost, and they started to have less time for each other as Del indulged himself in drinking more than talking and listening to what Sarah had to say. Aside from this, the problem also became evident as Del made a scene at a restaurant during their meeting with their friends. Sarah noticed that Del gradually became aggressive or violent with his words and actions, and it was evident during his tantrum episode at the restaurant, which made their friends afraid of them. Consequently, Del’s lousy drinking habits and adverse effects made their children afraid to see their father, especially when the former are with their children. The grandchildren are implied to be still young, and Del’s children do not want the grandchildren to witness the temper of their grandfather as this may have harmful effects on their behavioral development.
4 What caused the distress?
The main distressful event in Del’s show of aggressiveness and violence marked the beginning of fear for his family and friends. Moreover, another source of distress was Del’s neglect of the emotional needs of his wife and children and his inability to recognize or deny that his excessive alcohol consumption is already a problem.
Omkarappa & Rentala (2019) explained the adverse effects of alcohol-use disorder among the people surrounding the dependent. It has been shown to have a significant negative impact on the children’s development, which may start from infancy and affect them up to adu...
