Two months after accepting a new job, your friend Amy confides in you that she’s unhappy in her marriage. She tells you that she and her husband seem to be fighting all the time, and nothing seems to get resolved. She tends to be very high-strung anyway (Her friends call her "Type-A Amy") and now she feels like the stress of the constant bickering is affecting every aspect of her life, including her health. Since you're in a Psychology class, she asks you for your thoughts on the chances of her marriage surviving and your advice about what she can do about her stress.
Assignment Expectations
Based on what you've read (either in the assigned readings in this module or your own Internet research), you answer her questions by addressing 10 factors that may be related to the situation. Briefly discuss at least five of these factors (and how it may relate to Amy’s predicament) in a 4-5 page essay.

Cases of stress such as that of Amy are becoming quite rampant in the contemporary society. The responsibilities that come about due to having a job are many, and the routine of rising early in the morning and arriving home late at night does not make the situation any better. In the long run, this limits the amount of time couples could be spending with each other. Reduced contact and decreased communication compounded with stress from work stains lots of marriages (Contrada & Baum, 2011). When action is not taken on time, marriages end up breaking.
The fact that Amy has been able to realize the problem early enough, translates to the fact that there is a great chance of her marriage surviving. Furthermore, she has even gone ahead to seek consultation on how she could better the situation. With this kind of energy, Amy will be able to get rid of the stress that comes about with her job thus salvaging her marriage. However, the factors below that come into play must be taken into consideration.
Relaxation
It is common knowledge that relaxation helps significantly in the reduction of stress. In the realms of psychology, relaxation refers to the emotional state of low tension where arousal from anger, fear and anxiety is absent. In the case of Amy, the source of her stress may be her new job. Stress brings about disruptions in the normal physiological process due to chemical imbalances. This results in a fight or flight response. The fight response, which Amy is experiencing, is characterized by anger and agitation. Consequently, leading to the constant bickering that Amy has been having with her husband. The stress is threatening to destroy their marriage unless proper stress management strategies such as relaxation are put in place.
The best way to commence and maintain a relaxation practice is by incorporating it into one's daily routine (Kaspereen, 2012). Although it can be tough to find adequate time in a busy schedule, many of the relaxation techniques can be practiced while one is busy doing other things. For example, one can meditate while commuting to work, either on a train or bus or while waiting for an appointment. One can try deep breathing while carrying out his job duties or even while doing housework (Smith, Hancock, Blake-Mortimer, & Eckert, 2007). On the other hand, mindfulness walking can be done while climbing the stairs at work or while walking to one’s car.
Exercise
Stress brings about physical symptoms such as tension in the face, shoulders, and neck that ends up leaving one with neck and back pain or even painful headaches. Other problems likely to be experienced due to stress include heartburn, insomnia, diarrhea, and stomachache. The worry that is brought about by these symptoms may lead to more stress.
