The book provides an inquiry into economic issues and the influence in shaping up America in the 20th century. According to the author, Veblen, the aspect of absentee ownership provides one of the main principles that influence the people’s interest within the civilized society. The first part of the book presents an overview of the various economic circumstances and changes that took place in the 19th century, therefore, shaping the economic flow in the 20th century. The objective and extensive theoretical analysis of the various economic circumstances as given in the first section portrays the subject of the book as a dark figure within the economic system. This is an expression of the elaborate frustration that comes along with different levels that represent self-sufficiency (Veblen 9). Finding a solution to economic problems and meeting population expectations plays a significant role in retaining power and character.
This book by Veblen paints America as a country under the dominance of trusts as well as capitalist politics as if it represented the whole picture of the nation. The author seems to underestimate the various difficulties in the quest to produce enough that allows restoration of the world’s glory. This is since the tone of the book assumes that nature is already conquered, therefore, the need to worry about only the aspect of distribution and how to spend remaining hours of the day after elimination of the socialized work. The author posits that those unable to utilize the benefits of the instinct find themselves offended as portrayed in chapter nine. The basic cutting line of the book is that the prospects that define industrial civilization would be proved right if the people can hold to the principles of endurance. The overriding opinion is that there exists a solution not necessarily along the precepts provided by the Russels despite giving useful and compelling services. The book presents the author’s peculiar ironic philosophy concerning the current economic problems. According to the author, the early days were represented by the giants of business empires who commanded respect but later reduced into faceless bureaucracies. These giants were a good presentation of human traits and their faces.
