Finding a balance between personal life coaching and the promotion of wellness has been a challenge until recent advancements. In the publication Wellness Coaching for Lasting Lifestyle Change, Dr. Arloski draws on his extensive expertise as a health coach to create an easy-to-use training tool that is ideal for wellness professionals, professional coaches, managers, EAP professionals, counselors, and wellness educators. The coaching procedures presented in the book should assist in working with clients to empower them to use their strengths and resources to produce long-term improvements in their health. This review explores Arloski’s inputs through a summary, an insightful reflection, and an assessment of the possible applications of the inputs.
Summary
Michael Arloski employs Wellness Coaching for Lasting Lifestyle Change to steer an insight into various prospects in personal life coaching and promotion of wellness. The book dedicates 12 uniquely designed chapters to offer the necessary information leading to an effective technique in wellness coaching. The first four chapters give a background on the concept of wellness and what it means to approach wellness right from the dimensions to the continuum. Arloski (2014) asserts that people manifest different perceptions of what constitutes wellness because they showcase variations in health concerns. While wellness is complex and cannot be expressed in a singular sentence, an individual’s ability to live his/her life in multiple healthy prospects should enhance the individual’s overall health and wellbeing. Individuals who manifest maximum wellness and health should maximize their potential fully. Arloski (2014) discusses many models that can assist the coach and client in determining an agreed-upon definition of wellness, allowing the coach and trainee to create a working relationship and continue to develop strategies to help the individual achieve the desired lifestyle change (s).
Arloski (2014) suggests a 7-step model that should help coaches and clients in reaching the ultimate threshold for their health and wellness. In the model, the first step is assessment. In this first stage, the coach explores the position of the client in terms of wellness. The second stage encompasses foundation work in which both the coach establish the goals for their engagement. Prospects including spiritual, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and environmental health are all included in the goals. The third stage in the wellness model emphasizes setting the focus in which the coach and the client agree on the areas that need more focus. The other stages in the model include environmental support, initial behavioral change, deeper work on self, and emphasis on a lasting lifestyle change. All the chapters in Wellness Coaching for Lasting Lifestyle Change are dedicated to ensuring a developmental relationship between a coach and a client. This book is developed for health professionals who intend to diversify towards extensive inputs in wellness.
