What is in a Bird’s Name?
The naming of bird has been an issue of concern for a growing movement amidst the concern that most of the names rarely reflect the unique qualities of bird species. Reexamination of birds’ names follows the realization that most birds are named for honorific purposes and some of the people who are honored were supremacists or enslavers. There is a clamor to give bird new names that are more inclusive as some section of the society may have been pushed away by the current naming system.
Personally, I find the idea of renaming birds plausible as the unique nature of birds should be enjoyed by everyone. It is important to make sure that a bird viewer is not reminded of a historical injustice every time they see a bird named after a supremacist.
