The point of this assignment is for you to apply what you've learned in our course (lectures, article summaries, etc) to what you read in this novel.
Part of the challenge of these writing assignments is to learn how to summarize large amounts of information in a concise and accurate manner. This is different than being asked to write "filler" to meet a word count limit.
You will identify five behaviors of dinosaurs described in the book and explain why that behavior is or is not supported by the fossil evidence presented in this course.
You submission should be between 1000 words and 1050 words total. This total includes the five dinosaur behaviors you select from the book.
You do not have to use page citations but you should identify the chapter in which your chosen behavior is described. See grading rubric below.
I recommend that you wait to start working this writing assignment until after we have started covering the 5 clades of dinosaurs (Theropoda, Sauropodomorpha, Ornithopoda, Thyreophora, Marginocephalia), which will be in the later portion of the course. You can read the novel before that time, but the closer you read the novel to the time we cover the clades of dinosaurs in the assigned lectures, the easier the assignment will be to complete.
For the assignment submission, you will type your assignment into a word processing program and then cut and paste the text into the submission box provided after you select "Submit Assignment" (located in the upper right of this page). The "Submit Assignment" button will not be visible after the due date and time has passed.

Do not confuse physical features of dinosaurs with dinosaur behaviors.

I will be looking for evidence you actually read the novel and applied material presented in lectures to what is depicted in the book. Keep in mind that the book is significantly different than the movie adaptation!

Michael Crichton's The Lost World is a magnificent piece of fiction about scientists from various areas who embark on an excursion to an island to bring back a wealthy and obstinate researcher from a test voyage. The "lost world" is Isla Sorna, a Costa Rican island where the International Genetics Corps (InGen) genetically modified and concocted dinosaurs that had been extinct for sixty-five million years. The dinosaurs were utilized as incubators on this island before being transported to Isla Nublar, a nearby island. Real-life dinosaurs ruled over this forgotten place on this island (Crichton, 1996). If these dinosaurs managed to escape, they would threaten humanity. After that, the globe would be governed by the most fearsome dinosaurs. This paper examines five behaviors of dinosaurs described in The Lost World.
Behavior # 1: Spitting Venom from Chapter 2
Michael Crichton shows dinosaur behavior many times in his novel. For instance, there were little three-toed lizards and venomous spitting dinosaurs. Some of the behaviors were backed by fossil data, while others were not. One of the most widely held misconceptions in The Lost World is that dinosaurs do not spit out harmful toxins. A lizard attacked a young girl in the book after noticing she was hungry. The lizard left tiny bite marks about the length of a thumbprint on her skin and a frothy saliva deposit (Crichton, 1996). The diseased area began to grow and extend to the neck, causing respiratory problems. This scenario from the book did not represent empirical evidence regarding their habits because dinosaurs with destructive saliva are still a mystery. Crichton created this scenario to make the bite marks on the young child appear lethal. The green lizard stood about a foot tall and weighed roughly as much as a chicken or crow. It implies that complicated animal behavior can alter quickly, not always for the better and that behavior might become less receptive to its surroundings, leading to decline and death. It also implies that animals may eventually stop evolving. However, humans' fascination with dinosaur demise is not coincidental. The extinction of dinosaurs enabled mammals, including humans, to thrive.
Behavior # 2: Dinosaurs are Herbivores from Chapter 3
The dinosaurs in The Lost World were given imaginary personalities to appeal to the audience. First, Crichton stated that duckbilled dinosaurs were herbivores, confirmed by a trace fossil discovered in western North American coal strata that revealed footprints with plant remains. Furthermore, duckbilled dinosaurs needed to eat sufficient food for their body structure because they existed in a vegetative environment (Crichton, 1996). Duckbilled dinosaurs extended their skulls and straightened their snouts to access and process other food. The eyes and beak of the Dilophosaurus were regarded as having two curving crests. The red and black streaks on the emblems created a slight curve on the skull. The Dilophosaurus possessed two ridges on its head, according to genetic evidence. However, the color of the crest was unknown.
